Rocks, the pebbles, and the sand, moral story 

At the beginning of a philosophy class at university, the professor stood with some innocuous looking items on his table – an empty mayonnaise jar, some rocks, some pebbles, and some sand. The college students looked on with interest, wondering what the professor was up to and unable to guess what the demonstration was going to be.

Without saying a word, the professor started putting the small rocks into the mayonnaise jar one by one. The students were puzzled, but the professor did not offer any explanation just yet. Once the rocks were up to the neck of the jar, the professor spoke for the first time that day. He asked the students if they thought the jar was full. The students unanimously agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up the pebbles on his table and slowly poured them into the jar. The small pebbles found their way in between the larger rocks. The professor then lightly shook the jar to allow the pebbles to settle in the open spaces in the jar. He then again asked the students if they thought the jar was full, and the students again agreed.

The students now knew what the professor would do next, but still did not understand why. The professor picked up the sand and poured it into the mayonnaise jar. The sand, as expected, filled up any remaining space in the jar. The professor for the last time asked his students if the jar was full, and the answer was again a resounding yes.

The professor then explained that the mayonnaise jar was an analogy for life. He likened the rocks to the most important things in life – good health, your spouse, your children – all the things that make life complete. He then compared the pebbles to things that make your life comfortable such as your job, your home, and your car. Finally, he explained the sand is the small stuff that doesn't really matter.

Putting the sand in the jar first will leave no space for the rocks or the pebbles, the professor elucidated. Similarly, cluttering your life with the small stuff will leave no room for the big things that really count.

Pay attention to everything that is essential for a happy fulfilling life. Spend time with your children and spouse. Fixing the disposal and organizing that dinner party can wait. Holding a grudge against someone is not worth your while. Get your priorities right and differentiate between the rocks, the pebbles, and the sand.

To pay for his education, a poor boy used to sell goods from door to door. One day, the young boy found he was really hungry but had no money to buy any food. He decided to ask for something to eat when he knocked on the front door of the next house.

A beautiful young woman opened the door, and the boy lost his nerve. He simply asked for a drink of water, too embarrassed to ask for food. The young woman brought him a glass of milk, which the boy greedily drank.

The boy asked her how much he owed, but she simply smiled and said her mother had taught her to be kind to others and never expect anything in return. The young boy left the woman's home with a full tummy and a heart full of renewed strength to push on with his education and continue working hard. Just when he was ready to quit, the woman had instilled in him newfound faith and fortitude.

Years later, in a big city, renowned surgeon Dr. Howard Kelly was called to consult on a woman who was suffering from a rare disease. When the woman told him the name of the small town where she lived, Dr. Kelly felt a faint memory arise in his mind, and then suddenly recognition dawned on him. She was the woman who had given him the glass of milk many years ago.

The doctor went on to provide the woman with the very best care and made sure she received special attention. In fact, it was his skills as a doctor that saved her life. After a long and difficult hospitalisation, the woman was finally ready for discharge home. The woman was worried it would take her years to settle her account with the hospital. Her serious illness and long hospital stay had produced a substantial bill. However, when she received the bill, she found that Dr. Kelly had paid the entire bill himself and written a small note for her.

The note simply stated: Paid in full with a glass of milk.

वो घबरा गयी उसने अपनी दायीं ओर देखा, लेकिन ये क्या वहां एक बहेलिया उसकी ओर तीर का निशाना लगाये हुए था, उसकी बाईं ओर भी एक शेर उस पर घात लगाये हुए उसकी ओर बढ़ रहा था अब वो हिरणी क्या करे ?

मोहन काका डाक विभाग के कर्मचारी थे। बरसों से वे माधोपुर और आस पास के गाँव में चिट्ठियां बांटने का काम करते थे।

एक दिन उन्हें एक चिट्ठी मिली, पता माधोपुर के करीब का ही था लेकिन आज से पहले उन्होंने उस पते पर कोई चिट्ठी नहीं पहुंचाई थी।

रोज की तरह आज भी उन्होंने अपना थैला उठाया और चिट्ठियां बांटने निकला पड़े। सारी चिट्ठियां बांटने के बाद वे उस नए पते की ओर बढ़ने लगे।

दरवाजे पर पहुँच कर उन्होंने आवाज़ दी, “पोस्टमैन!”

अन्दर से किसी लड़की की आवाज़ आई, “काका, वहीं दरवाजे के नीचे से चिट्ठी डाल दीजिये।”

“अजीब लड़की है मैं इतनी दूर से चिट्ठी लेकर आ सकता हूँ और ये महारानी दरवाजे तक भी नहीं निकल सकतीं !”, काका ने मन ही मन सोचा।

एक दिन एक व्यक्ति ऑटो से रेलवे स्टेशन जा रहा था। ऑटो वाला बड़े आराम से ऑटो चला रहा था। एक कार अचानक ही पार्किंग से निकलकर रोड पर आ गयी। ऑटो चालक ने तेजी से ब्रेक लगाया और कार, ऑटो से टकराते टकराते बची।

कार चालक गुस्से में ऑटो वाले को ही भला-बुरा कहने लगा जबकि गलती कार- चालक की थी।

ऑटो चालक एक सत्संगी (सकारात्मक विचार सुनने-सुनाने वाला) था। उसने कार वाले की बातों पर गुस्सा नहीं किया और क्षमा माँगते हुए आगे बढ़ गया।

एक औरत बहुत महँगे कपड़े में अपने मनोचिकित्सक के पास जाती है और उसे कहती है कि उसे लगता है कि उसका पूरा जीवन बेकार है, उसका कोई अर्थ नहीं है। वे उसकी खुशियाँ ढूँढने में मदद करें।

मनोचिकित्सक ने एक बूढ़ी औरत को बुलाया जो वहाँ साफ़-सफाई का काम करती थी और उस अमीर औरत से बोला - "मैं मैरी से तुम्हें यह बताने के लिए कहूँगा कि कैसे उसने अपने जीवन में खुशियाँ ढूँढी। मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप उसे ध्यान से सुनें।"
तब उस बूढ़ी औरत ने अपना झाड़ू नीचे रखा, कुर्सी पर बैठ गई और बताने लगी - "मेरे पति की मलेरिया से मृत्यु हो गई और उसके 3 महीने बाद ही मेरे बेटे की भी सड़क हादसेमें मौत हो गई। मेरे पास कोई नहीं था। मेरे जीवन में कुछ नहीं बचा था। मैं सो नहीं पाती थी, खा नहीं पाती थी, मैंने मुस्कुराना बंद कर दिया था।

अत: इनमे से ही किसी एक को चुनना चाहिए ...लेकिन किसे ...? उसने बहुत सोचा फिर 

उसने एक काम किया ,वो बाजार गया और वहाँ से तीन बोरी गेहूं लाया ...उसने तीनो

बहुओ को अपने पास बुलाया और कहा.."ये एक-एक बोरी गेहूं , मै तुम तीनो को दे रहा हूँ

एक बार राजा भोज की सभा में एक व्यापारी ने प्रवेश किया । राजा भोज की दृष्टि उस पर पड़ी तो उसे देखते ही अचानक उनके मन में विचार आया कि कुछ ऐसा किया जाए ताकि इस व्यापारी की सारी संपत्ति छीनकर राजकोष में जमा कर दी जाए ।

व्यापारी जब तक वहां रहा भोज का मन रह रहकर उसकी संपत्ति को हड़प लेने का करता । कुछ देर बाद व्यापारी चला गया।

उसके जाने के बाद राजा को अपने राज्य के ही एक निवासी के लिए आए ऐसे विचारों के लिए बड़ा खेद होने लगा ।

राजा भोज ने सोचा कि मैं तो प्रजा के साथ न्यायप्रिय रहता हूँ, आज मेरे मन में ऐसा कलुषित विचार क्यों आया?

एक बार एक किसान परमात्मा से बड़ा नाराज हो गया ! कभी बाढ़ आ जाये, कभी सूखा पड़ जाए, कभी धूप बहुत तेज हो जाए तो कभी ओले पड़ जाये !

किसी गांव में एक व्यक्ति रहता था, वह बहुत ही भला था लेकिन उसमें एक दुर्गुण था वह हर काम को टाला करता था| वह मानता था कि जो कुछ होता है ,भाग्य से होता है।

एक दिन एक साधु उसके पास आया, उस व्यक्ति ने साधु की बहुत सेवा की उसकी सेवा से खुश होकर साधु ने पारस पत्थर देते हुए कहा - मैं तुम्हारी सेवा से बहुत प्रसन्न हूं तुम बहुत गरीब हो इसलिये मैं तुम्हे यह पारस पत्थर दे रहा हूंसात दिन बाद मै इसे तुम्हारे पास से ले जाऊंगा। इस बीच तुम जितना चाहो, उतना सोना बना लेना।
